Nationally bestselling author Barbara Early to launch Death of a Toy Soldier at The Bookworm in East Aurora—the same village where the book is set—on Saturday, October 15th from 11am-3pm.
September 16, 2016, East Aurora, NY--Local readers will soon be able to dive into a cozy mystery with a somewhat familiar setting. “I fell in love with East Aurora on my first visit,” says nationally best-selling author Barbara Early. “While others might see the village as historic, quaint, and sometimes quirky, I saw tremendous potential for fictional crime scenes.”
DEATH OF A TOY SOLDIER (Crooked Lane, ISBN 1629538388) follows the amateur sleuthing of Liz McCall, who manages the vintage toyshop owned by her father, a retired chief of police. He has trouble staying retired, however, and pulls Liz into his escapades. “The whole history of East Aurora as Toy Town was the inspiration for the vintage toyshop theme, which readers seem to think is a lot of fun,” Early said. Kirkus has characterized the book as a “well-turned mystery,” while Publishers Weekly called it “heartwarming.”
Don’t expect the resemblance to be exact, however. “All the people are fictional, of course,” Early said. “And while I hope I captured the genuine charm of the town, most of the businesses have been imagined or replaced with generic versions. After all, when you’re going to repopulate a town with killers, victims, and red herrings, you really don’t want locals recognizing their friends and neighbors.”
Readers attending the open-house-style launch at the Bookworm on October 15th can purchase a book to have signed, enjoy simple refreshments, and chat with the author. The Bookworm is located at 34 Elm Street in East Aurora, NY.
About the Author: Barbara Early authored the Bridal Bouquet Shop Mysteries (as Beverly Allen) and now writes the Vintage Toyshop Mysteries. She lives in Western New York.
